Geography

Kodom-Belur Grama Panchayat is a panchayat spread across the highland and midland regions of Kerala. The area is predominantly characterized by numerous hills, mountains, and valleys. The eastern parts of the panchayat, lying close to the Western Ghats, exhibit a more mountainous terrain, while the western parts display a midland landscape consisting of rolling hills and small plains. The panchayat is surrounded by several other important highland and midland panchayats.

The region is rich in streams and water bodies. One of the major tributaries of the Chandragiri River flows through this panchayat via the areas of Chullikkara, Kottody, and Udayapuram. The river flowing near the Odayanchal Ayyappa Temple is also an important water source for the locality.

In addition, natural water bodies such as Kaverikulam and numerous streams further enrich the region’s water resources.

The panchayat experiences the typical tropical climate of Kasaragod district. It receives heavy rainfall from both the southwest monsoon (Edavapathi) and the northeast monsoon (Thulavarsham). The months from March to May are generally hot, while heavy rains occur from June to September.

Being a hilly region, the area mainly consists of laterite soil along with fertile forest soil found near woodland areas. This geographical setting makes the land highly suitable for agriculture. On the hill slopes, crops such as rubber, cashew, pepper, and arecanut are widely cultivated. In the valleys and plains, coconut, paddy, vegetables, and tuber crops are extensively grown.

In short, Kodom-Belur Grama Panchayat is a beautiful highland landscape filled with green hill slopes, lush valleys, water bodies, and rich agricultural diversity.
